B. D. Dethan

B. D. Dethan is an acclaimed Indian painter from Kerala, born in 1946 in Thiruvananthapuram. He received formal training in painting from the School of Arts, Thiruvananthapuram, where he earned his diploma, and later attended an orientation course at Balabhavan and the Children’s Museum in New Delhi during 1971–72. His long and distinguished career has been closely associated with the development of the visual arts in Kerala. From 1977 to 2001, he served as Art Editor at the State Institute of Encyclopedic Publications, Government of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, while also working as an Honorary Art Instructor at Jawahar Balabhavan from 1971 to 1983. Over the years, Dethan has explored painting with a distinctive artistic vision, establishing himself as a respected figure in Kerala’s art community. He has held more than 20 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions across India and abroad, including exhibitions in Kuwait, Thailand, and Malaysia, as well as the Rashtriya Kala Mela in Bangalore. His works have found places in several important private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art and Parliament House in New Delhi, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, and Lok Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram. A recipient of several honours and recognitions, Dethan was awarded the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Fellowship in 2007 and served three times as a member of its executive committee. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field of visual arts, the Government of Kerala honoured him with the prestigious Raja Ravi Varma Puraskaram in 2019. Through his sustained engagement with painting, exhibitions, art education, and cultural institutions, B. D. Dethan continues to be recognised as an important figure in the history and contemporary landscape of Kerala’s visual arts.
