Biji Bhaskar was born in 1979 in Kothamangalam, Ernakulam district, Kerala. He developed a keen interest in painting from an early age. His occasional visits to his mother’s home at the foothills of the High Ranges gave him an opportunity to closely observe and experience the majestic Sahya Parvatham (Western Ghats). This early and intimate connection with the mountains, landscapes, and natural surroundings became a lasting source of inspiration, perhaps contributing to the distinctive realism that elevates his paintings beyond mere depictions of scenery into powerful and immersive expressions of nature.
Biji Bhaskar completed his Diploma in Fine Arts from R. L. V. College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura, in 2002. Following his studies, he began undertaking commissioned projects while simultaneously developing his own independent artistic practice.
During the early years of his career, Bhaskar explored diverse subjects, including human figures, animals, landscapes, and the struggles and realities of everyday life. As his artistic vision matured, his work gradually evolved towards themes of rural harmony, interconnected existence, and the intimate relationship between humans, animals, and the natural world.
Nature is not merely a subject in Biji Bhaskar’s paintings; it is a living presence. His curiosity about the relationship between humanity and the environment has led him to explore the subtle rhythms, connections, and interdependence that sustain life. His landscapes therefore move beyond straightforward representation, transforming the visible world into spaces of emotional and philosophical reflection.
A passionate lover of nature, Biji Bhaskar has a particular affinity for green, a colour that frequently assumes a powerful and expressive role in his paintings. Through intense colour, carefully observed forms, and imaginative compositions, he brings together human life, wildlife, landscape, and the forces of nature. His works invite viewers to contemplate the delicate balance and profound interconnectedness of all living beings.
Elements of surrealism emerge naturally within his practice. Familiar landscapes, animals, and human experiences are transformed into extraordinary visual realities, allowing the boundary between the observed world and the imagined world to become fluid. Through this approach, Bhaskar seeks not simply to reproduce nature, but to reveal its hidden beauty, mystery, and emotional depth.
Over the past 22 years, Biji Bhaskar has participated in more than 100 exhibitions, art camps, seminars, and other artistic programmes in India and abroad. His career has been marked by numerous awards, recognitions, and opportunities to engage with diverse artistic communities.
Today, Biji Bhaskar continues to explore the profound relationship between humanity and nature, creating works that transcend conventional landscape painting. His art celebrates the mystery, harmony, beauty, and interconnectedness of life, inviting viewers to see the natural world not simply as a landscape, but as an inseparable part of our own existence.
